Title: We're playing NS2 on TGNS
Post by: [IAM] AGTMADCAT on November 01, 2016, 01:11:50 PM
Hey everyone - We've been playing NS2 on Tactical Gamer's server. It's a great place, very similar to the culture of our servers when we had them. Teamwork is required, racial and sexual slurs lead to swift bans, and so on.

There are some quirks to the server setup, but it's well worth figuring out. Let me know if you have questions about anything in particular. If you haven't read and signed the TGNS Primer (Basically the rule set), you'll probably get comm-checked to confirm that you can hear voice comms. Just reply, and you should get verified for the rest of the game session.

Teams are capped at 8v8, which keeps games balanced and reasonable. It is considered uncouth to drop out in the middle of a round, but if it's an emergency, go ahead and go. Just call for a spectator to replace you before you go. Speaking of spectating - these are excellent games to watch. The level of teamwork and skill on display is typically phenomenal. The NS2 spectator interface is really nice, too.

One of the other important quirks is the concession system. If your team concedes, "WinorLose" is activated. The other team then has 60 seconds to kill your last CC/hive. If they succeed, they win. If they fail, you win instead. If the team that concedes manages to get themselves killed before the CC/hive goes down, the timer is reduced. This makes it possible for a concession to end up as a win. I've only seen it happen once, but it's definitely possible. Makes the end of the game slightly more amusing, too.

Final note: Captain's night is every Friday night. The server is password-locked, and a series of captain's games are arranged. Captains challenge each other, and then alternate player selection to populate their teams. You play one each as marines and aliens. Leaving during these games is very frowned upon, but people aren't unreasonable. This is the time to bring your A game - it's the closest to competitive play that I've ever seen or participated in. Teamwork is always on-point, and it makes a huge difference. Reserved slots are disabled during captain's games, so even if you're not a supporting member you won't be bumped mid-match. These games are the best NS2 I've ever played, and far and away the most fun I've ever had.

That's probably enough information for people to get started on the server. If you don't want to wait for the server browser to populate, here's the quick command to join:
connect tgns.tacticalgamer.com

Hope to see everyone ingame!

Thats awesome guys!  Love the addon ideas and I'm sure would make for an interesting game.  Those Friday Night matches sound awesome!  Love the ideas people are coming up with for games like NS.

I haven't played a computer game in ages.  I have so much going on I can't keep up.  Maybe one day I'll be able to jump on and see what it is in server space again.  Until then, enjoy it for me ;)
