iphones have their benefits, Flash is CPU intensive and alot of androids operating system uses flash. Thats why we have such "poor" battery life. And when you root your phone and install custom roms on it, its mostly people disabling a bunch of shit that really just didnt need to be running in the first place that wasn't essential to the phones operation.
I've had my fair share of android powered device failures.

iPhones are very reliable and are built with solid hardware, My dads ex gf had her iphone 4 ran over by a car. front and rear tire. both sides the glass crushed and the thing still worked flawlessly (minus the broken glass we had to replace but still). one of the reasons behind the iPhones having such good battery life is because it doesn't use flash, additionally they perform so well because when you're doing things within the UI of it, It prioritizes those actions over all other actions running on the phone, thats why you can swipe and switch windows so quickly etc. Apple has developed a damn good OS. Just. I like the ability to have freedom with my device and with a iPhone I don't have that.
