Question on a superchips programmer
« on: April 16, 2011, 06:10:13 PM »
Anyone know if its possible to re-flash a programmer to work with different vehicles as long as it uses the same interface?

Any type of programmer on a stock motor that isn't a diesel is worthless. Don't waste your money.

They all use the OBDII port, and no, you can't load the different programs yourself. The programmers don't have an EEPROM inside, just a plain old PROM that Superchips drops in for different applications.

so preprogrammed chips that can't be reprogrammed. thats all I wanted to know I already have a programmer and its for a 02 dodge diesel that we no longer have.

Well wait, you said a programmer, not a standard piggyback chip.

The piggyback OBDII chips can be flashed, but where you get the firmware from is generally an unreliable source. I wouldn't chance it with my car TBH, not to mention, chips on a gasser are useless unless you're cool with obnoxious timing profiles that make your shit ping while running on 93octane (usually on an engine that doesn't require it because it's not a high compression engine).

If your goal is modifying stuff like shift points or TCC lockup or something like that, that's one thing, but trying to get more performance out of a gasser with a chip is a waste of time.

I just wanna freakin disable my governor and idk what else I'd tweak. I guess if I really wanna do something I'd get a sniper kit with the programming software and the interface that plugs from my laptop to my car and program it like that.

Thing is I havent a clue what I'd do with that because I havent that in depth knowledge of vehicles and all that tweaking.

Im not sure if we're on the same page your saying a superchips programmer could be flashed with diff stuff for a different vehicle?

I get the whole not spending the money thing but if you already got it and can get the stuff somewhere else and make due with what you DO have. I'd do it. i've already got a programmer, if I had firmwares i could get on it somehow that allowed it to program to my car. hey cool..

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to disable the governor? I assume it's just speed limiting you, unless it's doing something screwy with RPMs between shifts.  If it's just speed, how fast do you want to freaking go on a highway?

No, a PROGRAMMER cannot be flashed, it does NOT have an EEPROM in it. The superchips programmers have EPROMS in them. If you could source them, I would assume you could get a EEPROM for it, and flash it, but you'd have to have their code because I'm sure it'll have some protection built in. The piggyback chips can be flashed, but that's not what you have. I know places where you can get the cracked software for them, but I'm not releasing that info, because it's a pretty private group.

Reread what I said above, I already answered this. The piggyback chip is just a little socket looking thing you plug into your OBDII port and leave there, the programmers are for modifying available routines in the PCM, but nine out of ten times, you have to have a hardwired controller or chip continuously attached to the PCM.
