Drummers New Computer Topic
« on: July 24, 2011, 02:19:10 PM »
I'm finally upgrading after my machine decided to die on me. I've revived it to the point where I can run it without any UI. Explorer.exe is somehow corrupt. (Don't bother providing advice, I've repaired from windows CD, changed the registry numerous times, ran 4 different virus/spyware/adware programs, ran 3 different registry cleaners, downgraded to SP2 and reinstalled drivers and then re-updated, uninstalled google desktop, ran over 15 different repair programs from Hirens Boot CD lastest version, used 2 different system restores 1 from last week and 1 from 2 months ago, and nothing has fixed this problem)

Soooo, the time has come and I need some recommendations and advice. Throw out some builds, I'll be looking myself later this afternoon. I'll be running windows 7, I get it free from my school so I don't need to worry about software.

MOBO:

RAM:

GRAPHICS:

CPU:

KEYBOARD/MOUSE:

TOWER:

MONITOR:

MISC:

The faster this gets done, the faster I'll be able to play games made after 2008 with you guys!

/e Oh, and kyle, can I not be on leave anymore. Please?

A new tower and everything in the tower.

MoBo, RAM, CPU, G-Cards, Power Supply

Also, I will be running some heavy video editing software. Got my hands on AfterEffects CS5 from school for my project and I need all the processing power I can afford.

Anything geared towards media/gaming/power

EDIT: I'll be honest, I haven't kept up-to-date on processors at all. Explain an I5 vs a Quad Core to me.
EDIT2: Also, funds permitting, a new sound system xD

that PSU in there might hold you over but it wont last you for long, its a cheapy.
you can get a diff PSU later if you wanna just get the tower + monitor for now.
There is no difference between a i5 and a quad core. an i5 is a quad core lol

I'd like to shoot for 8GB of RAM minimum. I figure 8 might not even be enough later on for heavy duty rendering.

My goal is to hit the 20th century at least.

/e Would appreciate more advice. I like Cody's build. That graphics card is a low end piece but it has some excellent reviews. Would it be worth it to utilize SLI and run two of them?

/e2 Also, difference between i5 and i7?

drummer, that card will do what you need it to lol. I have a 9800 and I'm still running games like bad company 2 on medium graphics getting 50+ FPS when other ppl somehow with gtx 285's get the same, Doesn't make sense to me but eyyy what can ya do.

that 550 will work just fine for you. ill look around at other kits tho see what i can find....

Update:
Thats the only kit that comes with 8gb of ram. looks like the best deal to me from whats on TD.

if you want to try and get a 2nd card to run SLI make sure the mobo will support it but if thats the case you're probably going to want to get a 700-800w psu and you're going to spend 80-150.00 getting one that is worth a damn.

new update: That board does not support SLI, still. I'm quite positive you'll be just fine running that card

ok. fair enough. Seriously considering that build. i'll run it by a few people at my work tomorrow morning and will make a purchase if everything is a go.

Keep posting ideas if anyone else is interested in improving my "e-experience"

/e and damnit kyle, take me off leave.

yeah, no. 529.00 alone just for the PSU mobo and processor. I couldnt fit a 560 8gb of ram hdd and a case into the mix and not hit over 800

i've reread through that barebones kit, the powersupply seems to be causing a lot of issues (hence why you suggested another one, thanks), it also had installation issues being a bottom mounted PSU, i can't find the size specs on the Diablotek but any variance in the OCZ PSU might cause space issues.

the OCZ is
150 x 140 x 86mm (W x L x H)

can you find the Diablotek one for me?

/E this kit is a good bargain, definitely thinking about this one.

if you wanna get technical

http://www.ocztechnology.com/resources/drivers/600SXS_MD.pdf

150 x 140 x 86mm (W x L x H)  <--- dimensions. you're all good bro.

I didnt know the diablotek was a shitty PSU. I just know I wouldn't want some shitty little 600w psu that costed 34.00 powering a computer thats got like 5-600.00 of internals in it.

I had a... powmax or something like that 600w psu that worked for me since 05 til 2010 I paid 24.95 for it. so they're not all bad. but still.
