Captains planning on a laptop for college!!!!
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:57:08 PM »
I need opinions.. Right now I'm looking at

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=631887&CatId=4938 - Has dual HDD bays and is sub 700.00. Right now I don't know how much I have to work with for graduation yet. But so far its looking like this might be the one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215120 - is my 2nd choice. Might be my first choice if I can figure out if it has a 2nd HDD bay.

2x HDD bays is important. I want future upgradability to SSD as an OS drive :P

Any other reccomendations people have please post.

I'm just happy to see that you're going to college.

Haha, I'll check out your links later.

What program are you going into? You might be fine with your desktop while you're at school. If you don't need to bring a computer to class, don't bother. When I was in science, nobody did. When I was in business, a few people did, but it was never needed unless they wanted to read up on articles right in class. Which was silly because they should know their shit ahead of time anyway.

I still want one just in case, i might find a use. And i want a laptop anyways for personal use too, i plan on going into a field of some sort where they can educate me on windows and linux server administration and also get a networking class going. The good stuff not sure what the other stuff i want to get into yet is.

As a brand, I've heard better things about Acer, but I don't know how much that matters.

Get a netbook. Playing games while studying in college is a major no-no. It can distract very easily from completing assignments or even going to class.
Netbooks are light, have great battery life and are not that expensive, all things considered.

I bought a near $2000 laptop when I came into college... And then I realized how crappy it was compared to an average $800-900 desktop.
So I bought another desktop at the end of my sophomore year. <_<

The moral of the story is, either know what you want damned well, or just get a desktop imo. Honestly I never, ever "needed" a laptop for college classes. In fact, most professors hate it cause everyone's on FB during the lectures... lol

Its not just for college use, its going to be for personal use too. I don't want a netbook.

and yep red, laptops can be shitty at times.

If you have a desktop, you dont need a laptop. Get a netbook and load up your favorite version of Linux on it. If you're carrying your laptop around to class just to play games and watch movies and porn, then you're doing it wrong. Netbook.
