BF3 Build
« on: October 10, 2011, 02:25:34 AM »
After lookign at my specs and askign some people I would pretty much need a new compy (even though this one is still smooth there's no real point to upgrading it.)

Anyone got an idea of a price point/parts that I would be looking at to build a decent compy that I won't be upgrading sometime soon.
(Keeping in mine that I mostly play older games, non graphically intensive games, and only a small amount of new games.)

To compare this is what I play:
HoN
Legions: Overdrive
Terraria
Battlefield BC2
StarCraft 2
Day of Defeat
Natural Selection 2
Red Orchestra 2
Torchlight

And my compy handles all those games with no problem.
I stutter a little on bf3 when I see smoke or fire, and I'll probably bog down if I ever play something like caspian. And ofcourse I'm not running at max.

So, little help?

Just out of curiosity can you post your current system specs?

I have a bud that runs the same mobo as me who's done lots of upgrading to it to the point where he's maxed out the abilities of it. He's building a new one next because the cost of more upgrades vs the cost of a new one would be similar or cheaper for better results.

Vid card is an HD4850 btw.

AMD: HD 5850 or HD 6870
NVIDIA: GTX 560

be prepared to spend upwards of $170-200
based off of here.

your build doesn't look that off from the recommended specs off the BF3 website to be honest.  I mean, I guess if you don't want to upgrade, you could always just do a new build but my guess is you're a better video card away from lagging in smoke.  My GTX 260 has handled the game on default specs pretty well.  It appears that with BF3, the more video memory the better.  I'm assuming your card has 512MB?  get something with 1 GB + and you'll be good to go

If you haven't already, I would try OC'ing your graphics card and trying to push out some performance there before you splurge for a new card or build. I originally had a 9800GT and I spent about $130($40 rebate) on a GTX 460, basically a nicer and newer version of the GTX 260 that squish has.

About the same specs as what I have. My CPU is a bit faster I believe, but otherwise I'm just planning on upgrading my ram and vid card (4gig and 512mb respectively).

I have a 560 right now, and this thing dominates the game. 200.00 card and I can run it on high. no problems. Although I plan on getting another mobo with bulldozer chips release that will support multiple GPU's and I'm going to use my old 9800 as a physx rendering card.

You should be okay with the current rig, but you may need to tone the settings down a bit to have a truly playable game.  From what the official specs are, your processor and video card are the only real concerns (as it is with just about any game) so those would be where I'd be looking at upgrading those.

Now, if it isn't financially irresponsible to do so, I'd say go out, get a new mobo, processor, video card, and just have a field day with making something awesome that could dominate anything that comes out for the next few years...but that could get a little expensive.  Otherwise, if the mobo has the space, and the power supply can supply enough power, link up some decent (but by no means top of the line) video cards via SLI or crossfire, or whatever the version is for the card/s gotten.  That's what I've been doing with my ATI HD 5770's, and it's been working out quite well, and the cards have gotten rather inexpensive as of late (If they can even be found, my cards would be at/under $100 these days)

A new card would run me $200.
But what would a build run me? I have a little cash to use towards a compy before it gets dumped back into the mortgage.

Keep in mind that I have all the non guts items.

Take a look at this website, it will tell you all about OC.

KC2000,
Where did you get your GTX460? I was thinking about using my 9800 GTX+ and a GTX460. My power is 750w and the mobo is SLI.
Cheers!!!

Only problem is that this is the O.C version(slightly more expensive) and the rebate is only $25.
